Carlitta Durand |The Doug and Patty EP
Carlitta Durand and Vaughn Garcia Present The Doug and Patty EP | 24.12.2009
The problem with starting a blog in January 2010 is that it’s damn near impossible to blog all the good sh!t that came before, aswell as all the good sh!t that we discover on a daily basis! We’re working on it though
.
So…who remembers the animated legend that is, DOUG Funnie?! Doug takes me back to Sunday mornings when my cousins and I would wake up at 6am and watch cartoons back to back for 3 hours, eating bowl after bowl of dry cereal (we didn’t have a microwave back then and I was too young to heat the milk up on the stove! Yes, it’s all about warm milk with cereal!).
ANYWAY! Doug has been brought back to life by way of The Doug and Patty EP by Carlitta Durand (and Vaughn Garcia of M1 Platoon). I can’t exactly remember the first time I heard this North Carolina-native sing, but I’d say it was probably through 9th Wonder, Little Brother or The Foreign Exchange, a couple years back (Check out Lose Your Way for starters!). She has a very distinctive tone to her voice, one that I can’t quite put my finger on but that isn’t easily forgotten all the same.
So I’ve been keeping an eye on the soulstress who is still unsigned, and has featured on a slew of records (check the above) as well as her solo release Carlitta’s Way “The Prelude” (Mar/Apr 2009). Fast forward to Christmas Eve 2009 when she beat Saint Nick down the chimney and planted this little gem in our stockings.

Carlitta Durand
I have The Doug and Patty EP on weekly rotation cause it’s my ish! Honestly speaking, the first time I listened to it, I wasn’t blown away. More than anything I thought the skits were hilarious (skip to track 5 on the Player below). But something told me to listen again…and now I can’t stop! It’s that ‘je ne sais quoi’ about Carlitta’s sound. This kind of raw-smooth quality that draws you in, and keeps you listening. It’s pretty much angelic.
So the whole theme of the EP is love (obviously – Doug and Patty never did get it together), and the chemistry between Durand and Garcia means the beats fit the subject matter like hand-to-glove. From the regretful Lost Love to the upbeat, playful Ode to Patty Mayonnaise, the sounds and instrumentation capture the mood perfectly, and production quality is A*. Admittedly this was my introduction to Vaughn, but I’ve been on a serious hunt for more of his beats ever since.
I think what makes the EP most enjoyable is the fact that Carlitta and co. are clearly very talented; but they don’t take themselves too seriously. Though don’t get it twisted this is a ‘serious’ recording, and very cleverly compiled. The love triangle between Doug, Patty Mayonnaise and Suzy Mustard is hilarious, as are the lyrics on Ode to Patty Mayonnaise… (peep the Hook below)…
“Patty Mayonnaise, you’re looking so fly, I gotta put you on my sandwich baby. It could be the wheatbread or it could be Rye, I gotta put you on my sandwich girl..”
The final skit Always is kinda random (really random, actually!) and is a ‘spoof’ interview with Rihanna, re. the whole Chris Brown saga (Then again I suppose it’s another ‘hit and miss’ (no pun intended) love story like Doug and Patty…sort of!). It sounds more like a group of friends that have had one too many glasses of Rose… and got a little bit silly. The Bajan accent is comical to say the least (cracks me up every time), but again not to be taken too seriously. The fact that Doug was even chosen as the theme for the EP should tell you this.
Bottom-line, it’s good music and they clearly had fun making it.
Word on the Tweet is that a video for Supernova is in the making so no doubt we’ll be posting that up when it surfaces. ENJOY and SHARE!

I loved Doug… and you’re right. Sunday mornings were the same for every family, although im not too sure about warm milk or dry cereal.
For a blog that started in January 2010 you certainly have a confident writing ability and your site looks fwesh… that’s Faaawesh.
