Daley | Those Who Wait (Mixtape)
Indeed, good things come to Those Who Wait. Since Daley started causing a stir on the London live scene a year or two ago, fans, observers and music heads have been eagerly awaiting a release from the Mancunian Soulman.
Those Who Wait is a ten track mixtape featuring some of Daley’s notable covers and collaborations over the past 12-18 months (Maxwell – Pretty Wings, Gorillaz – Doncamatic, Madonna – Like A Virgin) alongside some brand new material. Last night I gave it a first listen and woke up this morning humming Smoking Gun. I’m still getting to grips with it but I definitely hear my favourites already. Alone Together featuring Marsha Ambrosius is a clear front runner displaying incredible vocal chemistry between the two.
What I like about what I’ve so far heard, is that although he is clearly among the most Soulful of Soul singers, Daley hasn’t taken the predictable and perhaps easier route of releasing a mixtape full of Soul songs. Instead he’s stepped right out of his comfort zone and into what may be considered new territory for listeners who were expecting to hear just one type of sound from him. The Soul is deep within his vocal chords, but the lyrics and instrumentals add a new dimension to it all. It’s always admirable to see artists who aren’t afraid to step outside the box and experiment with their music.
Look out for interview and performance footage of Daley at allaboutgoodmusic Live!, coming very soon.
