Etta Bond x Raf Riley | Emergency Room (EP) & Boring Bitches (Video)
Etta Bond should be a name relatively familiar to most on this side of the pond, as the singer added a beautifully emotion-driven hook to Wretch 32‘s 2011 single Forgiveness.
Prior to this I’d heard bits and pieces via Etta’s SoundCloud, including the song Ask Me To Stay which has worked it’s way on to this project. I’ve had this EP on heavy rotation this week, just feeling it all out; and quite frankly, this sh!t bangs.
Boring Bitches was what first got my attention, if not for the visuals (Daggering greatly disturbs me), the Dubstep-esque build in the hook, but the ‘out and bad’-ness of the track. It’s humourous, in-your-face and unequivocally and explicitly honest!
Emergency Room is a collaboration between Etta Bond and fellow Odd Child-er and producer, Raf Riley. The beats are bass heavy, and the project explores various facets of Bass, Future and Electronic music. The instrumentals are predominantly built around rich layers of synths, combined with keys, strings and even the sax at times; which often takes the songs in unexpected directions. (Particularly, thinking about Baddy here).
These gritty and hard sounds juxtaposed with the dulcet and rather unique tones of Etta Bond, suprisingly works very well, and makes for a rather quality collection of tracks, that nicely showcase the talents of vocalist and producer. The lyrical honesty and candidness that runs through the entire project only heightens this and I expect you’ll hear alot of subject matter you can relate to in one way or another.
As a first, complete project, I think the pair have gone some way to demonstrating they have something fresh and novel to offer, and it’ll be interesting to see the progression from here. There’s something that feels a little bit rebellious and somewhat revolutionary about Emergency Room. Viva la revolucion, I say.
